A schwannoma is a tumor of the peripheral nervous system or nerve root. A schwannoma develops from cells called Schwann cells , a type of cell that wraps itself around peripheral nerves and provides protection and support Schwannomas are homogeneous tumors, consisting only of Schwann cells. The tumor cells always stay on the outside of the nerve, but the tumor itself may either push the nerve aside and/or up against a bony structure (thereby possibly causing damage). Schwannomas are relatively slow-growing

  1. A schwannoma is a tumor that develops from the Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system or cranial nerves. Schwann cells assist conduction of nerve impulses. This type of tumor is usually benign
  2. Schwannoma. Schwannomas, which are tumors derived from the myelin sheath of peripheral nerves, can be found involving the cranial nerves within the cavernous sinus and parasellar regions. In general, pituitary function is not affected; however, often the cranial nerves III, IV, V and VI are affected within the cavernous sinuses or in the suprasellar and prepontine cisterns
  3. Schwannoma A schwannoma (sh-won-oma) is a tumour of the tissue that covers nerves, called the nerve sheath. These tumours develop from a type of cell called a Schwann cell, which gives them their name
  4. A schwannoma is a tumor that grows in the sheaths of nerves in your peripheral nervous system, or the parts of your nervous system that aren't in your brain or spinal cord
  5. Schwannomas, less commonly called neurinomas or neurilemmomas , are benign tumours of Schwann cell origin and are the most common tumour of peripheral nerves, including cranial nerves
  6. Melanotic (pigmented) schwannoma: Contains pigmented cells with melanosomes that express melanocytic markers. Usually arises around the spinal nerve roots. May show sheets of adipose-like cells and psammoma bodies. Large, vesicular nuclei with macronucleoli, high mitotic activity and necrosis portend worse prognosis

  2. What is a schwannoma. Schwannoma is a benign, slow‐growing, solitary tumor of the nerve sheath that covers nerves, called the Schwann cell 1).Schwannomas were first described by Verocay in 1908 2) and have since been given several names although schwannoma and neurilemmoma are the most common terms.. A schwannoma typically comes from a single bundle (fascicle) within the main nerve and.
  3. However, acoustic neuroma is a misnomer, because the tumor actually grows on the vestibular component and is pathologically a schwannoma. Tumors can enlarge significantly to cause cerebellar findings and obstructive hydrocephalus, and may become life threatening as a result
